What Are Conditional Sentences?

Explicación sencilla:

Conditional sentences allow us to talk about real situations, possible events, hypothetical scenarios, and imaginary situations.

Ejemplos:

• If you practice regularly, you will improve.
• If I had more time, I would learn another language.

Zero Conditional

Use: Facts, routines, general truths.

Structure:

If + present simple, present simple

Examples:

• If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
• If people don't practice, they usually lose confidence.

Professional examples:

• If a customer has a problem, we usually offer support.

First Conditional

Use: Real possibilities in the future.

Structure:

If + present simple, will + verb

Examples:

• If you prepare well, you will feel more confident.
• If the client agrees, we'll start the project next week.

Second Conditional

Use: Hypothetical or unlikely situations.

Structure:

If + past simple, would + verb

Examples:

• If I had more time, I would study another language.
• If I were you, I would accept that opportunity.

Third Conditional

Use: Imaginary situations in the past.

Structure:

If + past perfect, would have + past participle

Examples:

Mixed Conditionals

Examples:

• If I had accepted that job, I would be living abroad now.
• If she weren't so disorganized, she would have finished the project yesterday.

Advanced Conditional Expressions

Aquí pondría tu diferencial:

Unless

• Unless you practice, you won't improve.

Provided that

• We'll approve the project provided that the budget is available.

As long as

• You can work remotely as long as you meet the deadlines.

Even if

• Even if the market changes, we will continue investing.

If only

• If only I had started learning English earlier.

I wish

• I wish I had more confidence when speaking English.

Conditional Inversion
